Backside Aerial

Liam Dunkerbeck shows the backside aerial

The backside aerial is a jump performed when riding a wave to windward. Instead of just doing a backside turn, you can use the steep lip of the wave to catapult the board into the air. This works particularly well in side-onshore conditions, as Liam Dunkerbeck demonstrates here in Pozo – a shot from the PWA World Tour stop in Gran Canaria.

The movement is similar to that of a shove it. Your body weight is shifted onto the sail, which is laid flat and pushed forward. You can follow the movement in this slow-motion video.
