Attacks, radicals, Big Tech
DAILY DOSE has been online for 28 years, and as you may have noticed, for about a year now we have eliminated tracking adverts. You will only see banner adverts that neither profile you nor track you across the web. Previously, some of DAILY DOSE’s advertising space had been sold via brokers, as is standard practice in the industry. For ethical and strategic reasons, we no longer wish to be part of this market, which has been taken over by Big Tech.
DAILY DOSE aims to be a friendly, honest and positive place – but upholding these values costs us money.
Ideally, we’d run DAILY DOSE completely ad-free and free of charge for everyone. However, that’s not possible, as someone has to pay for the server and staff time. Many companies in the water sports industry contribute via banner adverts and listings in our link directories. This covers part of the costs.
We also need to talk about other challenges.
Attacks by third parties
Our server is under increasing and targeted attack on many levels, and traditional hacking attempts have also risen sharply. The origins of these attacks are varied, but they often come from third countries with an interest in harming German companies. Defensive measures cost us time and money.
Radicals and criminals
Attempts to post political disinformation are on the rise in the forum and the Quick Pics section. Following the deletion of a far-right political post in the Quick Pics, a threat of an arson attack was made. Targeted trolling and attempts at fraud are, unfortunately, now part of our daily routine.
Our staff’s time is tied up, for example, with monitoring and necessary responses. Filing criminal complaints also takes time, and lawyers cost money. The effort required to deal with this rubbish is increasing.
Proposed solution: Voluntary support from the community.
To enable us to run DAILY DOSE in the face of these new challenges without a paywall – all content should remain freely accessible – we will rely on partial funding through voluntary donations in future.
How much do streaming services, a night at the cinema or a meal at a restaurant cost you? Think about how much time you’ve spent on DAILY DOSE over the years. Where does DAILY DOSE fit into this picture?
