A hot tour finale in Rapid Surfing
The o2 SURF MASTERS, a German competition series in rapid surfing, took place at five locations: Osnabrück, Düsseldorf, Berlin, Langenfeld, and Freiburg. The grand season finale last weekend at irie surf in Freiburg provided some relief from the heat—at least for the participants.
Although Munich native Valeska Schneider had already secured the overall title—with an unassailable lead—after three consecutive wins even before
today’s final, she didn’t give her
competitors in Freiburg an easy ride. In a high-caliber final, she confidently surfed her way to
second place. However, the day’s victory in Breisgau went to her friend
Alena Gubler from Zurich, who impressed the judges
with an extremely strong performance.
This success also catapulted Gubler far up the final standings of the
series: She ultimately tied for third place in the
overall rankings with Lea Sasse from Munich. Second place in the
overall standings, meanwhile, went to Anika Weizel from Osnabrück. Although Weizel
missed out on a spot in the final three in Freiburg, she had
already secured this strong second-place finish in the overall standings thanks to three second-place
finishes at previous tour stops.
The 17-year-old Swiss surfer Sue Gartmann also caused quite a stir in
the daily standings,
securing third place on the Freiburg podium with a carefree performance
.
The men’s final was all about the big showdown for the
tour title in this competition series. Going into the Freiburg stop, Hannes Mosch from Berlin and Marius Øystein
Gerlach from Munich—the two best athletes of the
season—each had two wins under their belts; the starting point for the title race
couldn’t have been more thrilling.
In their head-to-head matchup, Gerlach ultimately kept his
cool: He finished the contest in second place, landing just ahead of
his third-place Berlin rival Hannes Mosch and securing the
well-deserved overall victory.
Meanwhile, the day’s victory in Freiburg
went to someone else entirely: Antonin Meier, also from Munich,
had an absolutely stellar day; he simply surfed a cut above
the rest of the field today and was fully deserving of his first-place finish at irie surf in
Freiburg.
