Late Summer in Cold Hawaii

Late Summer in Cold Hawaii

Hanstholm - Middles, September 16, 2025

Just before the start of fall, there were still a number of good surfing days in northwestern Denmark this year. This was also the case during the last week of summer, which was marked by steady southwest to west winds.

One of the really great days for surfing was September 16 at the spot called Middles in Hanstholm. Not only were the final results of the PWA Youth World Cup in the wave discipline decided there - the day also offered plenty of fun for all recreational sailors.

Although the North Sea swell was surprisingly small that morning despite a fairly strong westerly wind, anyone familiar with the forecast could have predicted that the wave conditions would pick up later that Tuesday.

A large wind field over the North Sea and westerly winds almost always ensure that the waves build up throughout the day and later roll into the bay off Middles with good height and long lines.

It all worked out perfectly that day, too. In the afternoon, the wind was blowing perfectly sideshore for the 4.5, so nothing stood in the way of jumping and riding. And it was truly amazing - as you could tell from the countless beaming faces after the session.

The only things marring the idyll were the scent wafting from the sewage treatment plant directly upwind and the occasional flakes of sewage foam drifting over - fortunately, these were only noticeable in the parking lot and not on the beach or in the water. It almost makes one long for the more maritime smell of the old fishmeal factory.

After a few hours on the water and taking photos before and after, I stopped by the pier on my way back to the campground to watch a handful of windsurfers and wing foilers in the evening sun. The following days were also windy and wavy - all in all, one of the best trips to the far north.

Tip for campsites:
The two large campgrounds in Hanstholm (www.hanstholm-camping.dk) and Klitmøller (nystrupcampingklitmoller.dk) cost just under 20 and 16 euros, respectively, in the off-season (1 person + campervan, without electricity, including a hot shower). The campground in Hanstholm is also open in winter.
