Windsurfing Report for April 20, 2026

Last weekend, there were already signs that a small storm from the northeast would be brewing along the German Baltic coast at the start of the week.

And that’s exactly what happened on Monday morning. A receding low-pressure trough brought in cool sea air and accelerated the air masses. The result: a solid 7–8 on the Beaufort scale from the northeast blew into Lübeck Bay. All this with an air temperature of just under 9 degrees, but under a bright blue sky.

With the tank nearly full, I completely ignored the gas station’s “cheap” diesel price of 2.09 euros per liter so as not to waste a single minute on the drive there. Kellenhusen-Süd was the destination - not ideal for a northeast wind, since the wind tends to be a bit gusty inland, but given the forecast wind strength, that was negligible.

A good dozen vehicles were already parked in the lot behind the dike near the surf school. 7.50 euros in coins went into the parking meter; payment via app is no longer possible.

They were just changing sails out on the field because the wind had picked up. I hoisted the 3.6 onto the mast, and less than fifteen minutes later I was zooming across the Baltic waves, getting blown around quite a bit. There was plenty of pressure - perfect for riding the waves close to shore.

Further out, the waves had died down a bit; really steep ramps were hard to find. A bit unexpected given the large wind field, but Kellenhusen is known to work perfectly only when the wind is blowing from the east-northeast.

It was surprising how many surfers had the early Monday afternoon off; the spot was as crowded as on a windy day in the height of summer.

Even though many shops and brands are struggling right now due to the market situation, people are definitely still windsurfing - the water was really crowded. There were also plenty of kiters out on the water; only the wingers had opted for the evening hours due to the strong wind.

Around 4:30 p.m., the wind died down and the waves actually got worse rather than better. Switching to a 4.0, then to a 4.7, didn't help; the best conditions were in the early afternoon.

Despite the sunshine, the air temperature dropped to 7°C, so gloves and a hood were still a must. It was time to pack up and head home in the evening sun. The first good windsurfing day of 2026 is now marked on the calendar.

The photos and short video from this windsurfing day show what the conditions were like in Kellenhausen on April 20.
