GoPro Mission 1

New action cameras with 1-inch sensors, super slow motion, and interchangeable lenses

Bucking the trend toward ever-increasing miniaturization, GoPro’s new action camera is getting bigger. The Mission 1 series is designed to deliver better image quality and more professional features thanks to its one-inch sensor. The GoPro Mission 1 ILS even supports interchangeable lenses with a Micro Four Thirds mount. Prices start at 599 euros.

Super Slow Motion and Open Gate
However, the new sensor can capture 8K across its entire surface at a reduced frame rate of up to 30 frames per second. In 4K, the frame rate is 120 frames per second. In professional lingo, this is called “Open Gate.” This allows you to decide later which format to use for the video, whether horizontal or vertical.

The sensor achieves 240 frames per second at 16:9 4K resolution. In Full HD, there is a mode with 480 frames per second. Additionally, the Pro and ILS models can record 960 frames per second for a short period. These are extreme slow-motion rates. At 480 frames per second, one second of action becomes a 19-second slow-motion clip. Photos are captured at 50-megapixel resolution.

Three variants
The Mission 1 is available in three variants, with the Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro differing in details, while the Mission 1 ILS stands completely apart. The camera allows for interchangeable lenses, but this makes it no longer waterproof and requires an underwater housing if needed. In professional settings, such cameras are used as crash cams, for example when filming car chases.

Additionally, a hand grip is available for the Mission 1 if the camera is used handheld. However, despite all their professional features, the two base models remain action cameras at heart. The fixed lenses do not have an adjustable aperture. This is only possible with the interchangeable lenses on the M 1 ILS.
