PWA World Cup and IFCA European Championships in St. Peter Ording
The IFCA Foil European Championships in St. Peter Ording have been upgraded to a PWA World Cup. With this double event, the organizers have pulled off a real coup.
Let’s briefly sort out the players:
The IFCA, as the International Funboard Class Association and recognized by the World Sailing Federation, is authorized to hold World and European Championships in windsurfing. These events are organized as single-event competitions. A single event determines the title. For example, the World Championship titles in fin and foil slalom were already awarded this year in April in Leucate.
The PWA, or Professional Windsurfers Association, holds Special Event status with the World Sailing Federation for its tour. Ideally, the winners are determined over the course of multiple events.
Choppy Water GmbH has been organizing the German Windsurf Cup for many years and occasionally hosts an IFCA event in this context. Now, the team led by Matthias Regber has pulled off a real coup. The event, which takes place from July 15 to 19 in St. Peter Ording, is not only an IFCA European Championship in Foil Slalom but will also be a four-star PWA World Cup. Accordingly, the event also counts toward the PWA Tour standings.
40,000 euros in prize money
Approximately 40,000 euros in prize money will be awarded in St. Peter. At least 25,000 euros will go to the participants in the Foil Slalom. At least 15,000 euros have been set aside for the Fin Slalom. However, this discipline does not count toward the IFCA or PWA standings.
This makes this windsurfing cup a very special event that is sure to attract many top riders.
The timing is somewhat unfortunate, however. The PWA Windsurf World Cup on Fuerteventura takes place starting July 17 and thus overlaps with the event in St. Peter for a few days. From a media perspective, it is not ideal when individual events on a tour have to compete with one another for media attention.
