Insta360 X6

New version of the 360 camera with 8K at 50 fps and zero editing

The X6, the latest generation of 360 cameras from insta360, is now available. Even before its release, there was a lot of excitement about what updates it would bring compared to its predecessor, since its video resolution had not yet been optimal compared to standard action cameras, which can film in a single direction at resolutions ranging from 5.3K to 8K.

A brief look at the recording technology:
360-degree cameras, such as the models from insta360, use two lenses pointing in opposite directions and stitch the two 180-degree images together to form a 360-degree sphere. From this panoramic view, you can then zoom into any part of the image during editing, select the desired frame, and even add pan shots afterward.

As with its predecessors, the X4, X4 Air, and X5, the X6 also captures 360-degree footage in 8K. This means there’s no improvement in physical resolution on paper - a feature we would have liked to see. If you select a narrower frame from the 360 video - one that corresponds, for example, to footage shot with a wide-angle lens or a traditional action cam - the image resolution is correspondingly lower.

Insta360 has improved the frame rate, sensors, and software on the X6. The frame rate of 360° videos has been doubled, and 50 frames per second in 8K videos are now possible. This means simple slow-motion effects can now be achieved even at the highest resolution.

Image quality has also been improved. Two specially developed 1.1-inch Sony sensors offer 33% more sensor area than the previous X5 model and capture about four times more light per image. Filming in low light, strong backlighting, or high-contrast conditions should be no problem.

An 8-core processor with two dedicated imaging chips delivers 500% more processing power than the X5. The result is sharper details, cleaner colors, and noise reduction that is said to perform impressively even in the dark.

The X6 now offers higher video resolution in single-lens mode, with up to 5K at 60 fps.

Insta360 has gone to great lengths to make managing recordings easier. Post-production of 360 video always requires the additional step of selecting the appropriate frame to generate a video in landscape or portrait orientation for display on screens or smartphones.

AI is now set to take over this task and even go a step further by enabling “zero editing.” The footage is analyzed during transmission, and read to use videos are automatically created from the recordings.
